THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE

The construction of the Great Temple began in 1325.  It was built by the Aztecs in their capital city, Tenochtitlan, and was built by using earth and stone.  According to legend, the Great Temple lies where Huitzilopochtli gave the Aztecs the sign that they should settle there.  This sign was an eagle perched on a cactus with an snake in its beak.  The location of this temple is symbolic in another way because the Aztecs believed that Huitzilopochtli was born in that exact spot.
